At Crestview Recovery, we take pride in providing a safe, non-judgmental environment for individuals to heal from addiction. We treat individuals of varying backgrounds, including those in military service.

If you or a loved one is a service member struggling with substance abuse disorder, know you’re not alone. The Military Medicine journal indicates that those who serve in the military have a high risk for alcohol, tobacco, and substance use. This condition impacts an individual’s quality of life and ability to fulfill their duties as a military service member, so it’s imperative to get help immediately.

Crestview Recovery recognizes that the best treatments for addiction and mental health are tailored to the individual, including those with a military background. For this reason, we offer a military substance abuse program specifically designed for active-duty service members: Recovery Integrity Support Endurance (R.I.S.E.).

Recovery Integrity Support Endurance (R.I.S.E) Program

The Recovery Integrity Support Endurance (R.I.S.E.) at Crestview is a specialized treatment program designed for active duty service members struggling with substance use and/or mental health disorders.  It recognizes the unique challenges faced by military personnel and offers comprehensive, evidence-based care tailored to their specific needs.

At Crestview Recovery, we want to support active-duty service members by guiding them through this program. Participants will have a detailed weekly schedule that includes mindfulness practices, such as morning reflection and yoga. There will also be community meetings as well as specific courses and groups for recovery, such as individual therapy and classes for relapse prevention and processing trauma.

R.I.S.E. provides a safe and supportive environment where service members can address their struggles, develop coping mechanisms, and begin the journey toward recovery. It aims to equip individuals with the tools and strategies necessary to maintain sobriety, manage mental health symptoms, and return to full and productive duty.

The R.I.S.E. Program addresses the often co-occurring challenges of substance use and mental health disorders.  Untreated, these issues can significantly impact a service member’s health, career, and overall quality of life.  Our program’s focus on integrated treatment acknowledges the complex interplay between these disorders and aims to provide comprehensive care that addresses all aspects of an individual’s well-being.

By offering specialized care to those with a military background, R.I.S.E. helps reduce the stigma associated with seeking help and encourages service members to prioritize their mental and physical health.  Ultimately, the program’s goal is to support the recovery and resilience of our service members, ensuring they are ready to fulfill their duties and lead healthy, fulfilling lives.

How RISE Helps Active-Duty Service Members?

The RISE program utilizes a variety of therapeutic approaches designed to address the complex needs of active-duty service members struggling with substance use and mental health disorders. These therapies work together to provide a holistic and comprehensive path to recovery, focusing on individual well-being and return to duty.

This approach recognizes that well-being encompasses more than just the absence of substance use or mental health symptoms. Holistic therapy addresses the whole person – physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. For service members, this might include stress management techniques, mindfulness practices, nutritional guidance, and physical activity.  By addressing all aspects of well-being, holistic therapy helps service members develop a balanced lifestyle that supports long-term recovery and resilience.

Process group therapy sessions provide a safe and confidential space for service members to share their experiences, challenges, and successes with others who understand what they’re going through. They foster a sense of community and mutual support, reducing feelings of isolation and shame.

For active duty personnel, this peer interaction can be particularly valuable as it allows them to connect with others who have faced similar pressures and experiences within the military environment. Sharing and receiving feedback in this setting can lead to increased self-awareness, improved communication skills, and the development of healthy coping mechanisms. Crestview Recovery’s RISE program schedule hosts process groups four days a week, emphasizing their importance.

This component of the RISE program provides service members with education about substance use disorders, mental health conditions, and the recovery process. Understanding the nature of addiction, the impact of trauma, and the importance of coping strategies empowers individuals to take an active role in their recovery.

For active duty members, psychoeducation can also address the specific challenges they face, such as the impact of military culture, deployment-related stress, and the stigma associated with seeking help. This knowledge helps to reduce self-blame, increase motivation for change, and equip individuals with the tools to navigate their recovery journey.

Experiential therapy allows service members to experience and process emotions in a new way. Examples include art therapy, music therapy, recreational activities, and adventure-based challenges. For active duty personnel, experiential therapy can be particularly beneficial in addressing trauma, fostering resilience, and building teamwork skills. These activities can help individuals access and express emotions that may be difficult to verbalize, develop new coping strategies, and build confidence in their ability to overcome challenges.

Crestview Recovery features community activities (such as community outings) on the weekends to provide opportunities for service members to connect with others in a supportive environment, build social skills, and practice healthy behaviors outside of the treatment setting. This can help them reintegrate into civilian life, reduce feelings of isolation, and develop a sense of belonging. These activities can also provide opportunities for service and giving back to the community, which can be a powerful part of the healing process.

Substance Abuse in the Military

Due to strict policies within the military, it’s hard to pinpoint how many active-duty service members are struggling with addiction. The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that more than 1 in 10 veterans who seek care from the U.S. Veterans Administration meet the diagnostic criteria for substance use disorder.

Drug use is prohibited within the military and enforced with a zero-tolerance policy and random urinary drug tests. While this is standard practice for many types of employment, the strict policy, fear of confidentiality, and social stigma serve as barriers for active-duty service members seeking help for addiction.

According to the Journal of Social Work Practices in the Addictions, deployment is linked to the start of excessive alcohol consumption and smoking. This may be due to the unique stresses of military life, the change in lifestyle, or a co-occurring mental health condition.

Can You Go To Rehab While on Active Duty?

Even while on active duty, service members can go to rehab. Each branch of the military has its specific drug abuse prevention programs, which often include treatment when needed.

The United States military offers several programs and resources for service members struggling with substance abuse. These programs aim to support recovery and return individuals to full duty status. Here’s how it works:

  • Self-referral: If you recognize you have a problem, you can voluntarily seek help through your unit, medical provider, or chaplain. This is often seen as a sign of strength and can lead to less severe consequences than being caught through other means.
  • Command referral: If your command notices signs of substance abuse (e.g., declining performance, legal issues), they may refer you to treatment.

If you or a loved one is struggling with addiction and are an active-duty service member, it’s important to reach out for help. At Crestview Recovery, we’re dedicated to providing quality care and support for those struggling with addiction and mental health in the Portland metro area.
